Lighting Expert

Training in lighting design.

In preparation.

Who it is for

Lighting Expert is for anyone interested in lighting design. It is built in stages, so you take the parts that interest you. It starts with the basics: what light is, and how classical lighting design uses it. From there it goes on to the advanced topics that lighting design hardly uses: measuring the quality of light, coloured and tunable light, scenes driven by data, and light-emitting surfaces. An experienced designer will find the most in those later stages.

Five stages

  1. What light is, and classical lighting design. The basics, and a refresher for anyone who already works with white light.
  2. Metrics improve your quality. Colour rendering, colour consistency, flicker, and how to measure them.
  3. Colour and tunable enhance any design. Tunable white, the tuning path, warm dimming and colour.
  4. The power of data. Scenes driven by data rather than fixed looks.
  5. Light-emitting surfaces. LED walls, luminous textiles, tape and panels as sources in their own right.

Forty lessons, about an hour each. Each lesson starts from what a working designer already does and says what the change buys the client. One lesson in the first stage is free.
